Ivan Spotted In Pomona!

CWA protesters met Ivan the Rat outside Verizon’s Pomona office at 280 Locust Ave, in Pomona on Thursday, February 25.  “Ivan the Rat”, named after Verizon CEO Ivan Seidenberg, is making the rounds of Verizon locations throughout the state and CWA members are there to let the public know why. (more photos)

This time, the rally was called in response to more announced job cuts at the Pomona office and the movement of work out of state.

CWA 9000 President T Santora reminded the crowd that, “California is the cash cow for Verizon West and this company owes a debt to its workers who make the huge corporate profits possible as well as to the communities that pay the bills.”

We’re not asking for more than our fair share.  We won’t settle for rat cheese!

LaborFamilyNews

The LaborFamilyNews is an excellent source of information for working families.  It is the newsletter of the Labor Project for Working Families.  The Labor Project partners with unions to advocate for family friendly workplaces because no one should have to choose between work and family.

Like CWA, the Labor Project envisions a world in which all workers have time and resources to care for themselves and their families.

Founded in 1992, the Labor Project is a national non-profit organization that educates and empowers unions to organize, bargain and advocate for family friendly workplaces. We build broad based coalitions that unite labor, community and advocacy groups to advance policies that put families first.

CWA 9000 is proud to support the Labor Project for Working Families.

Restore Marriage Equality

In November 2008 Proposition 8 amended the California Constitution, taking the right to marry away from same-sex couples.  This injustice should never have come to pass.

Now it's time to repeal Prop 8 and restore equality.  In order to do that, a new initiative is required.  To place the initiative on the November 2010 ballot it will take one million California voters to sign the official petition.

Unfortunately, voters can’t sign online or by email - every signature must be gathered the old fashioned way: with pen and paper.  CWA 9000 volunteers have joined with thousands of others from across the state to begin the signature gathering process.  We are asking you to join us.  Under state law we are given only a few months to gather the required one million signatures, and we need your help to make it happen.  Our deadline is April 5, 2010 but we must start now!

Everything you need to do your part is right here.  Click on these links to read answers to Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s) .  Download and print the petition form. Join or create signature-gathering teams of your own or contact the Local to meet up with other CWA members for equal rights.

Sign for Equality is making history. Be a part of it.  Then, on November 3, 2010 we'll wake up to equality in California once again.

Solidarity With Haiti

In a move to encourage Americans to continue supporting the relief effort underway in Haiti, Congress passed a bill to make contributions to Haitian relief work deductible from 2009 income taxes. In the aftermath of the January 12 earthquake that struck Haiti, the poorest nation in the Western hemisphere, relief in many forms is still desperately needed. Your financial contribution, no matter how large or small, can make a life-saving difference today amid the devastation.

If you haven’t made a contribution, here is a great way to stretch you donation even further.  The AFL-CIO’s Union Plus provides consumer benefits to members and retirees of participating unions. As a commitment to help union members in Haiti, Union Plus has offered to match individual donations to the Solidarity Center’s Earthquake Relief for Haitian Workers Fund dollar-for-dollar, made for any amount, either by credit card or by check. Donors need not be Union Plus members. The offer will stand until we reach $100,000 in donations.

Donations are already being put to use in the ravaged capital. Delegations from Dominican unions have traveled to Port-au-Prince with truckloads of bottled water, non-perishable food, first aid products, re-hydration liquids, and other needed supplies. Many union halls withstood the quake and are now being used as distribution centers, shelters, and clinics for hundreds of workers and their families.
